LE DERNIER COURRIER

Le Dernier Courrier is a game realized over a three-month period, as a team, during the first year of Master at CNAM-ENJMIN. Personally, as I was studying in Montréal for this first year, I took part in this project from afar, as a Narrative Designer.

Joseph rides slowly. Today, he has time. One last delivery round awaits him, and a few words to pass on before night falls. In his satchel, there are letters, promises, and unspoken things. It is a day to move on… or maybe to finally understand what truly matters. In this contemplative game, while on foot or on a bike, listen, deliver, and above all, explore. Le Dernier Courrier is all about memory, freedom, human connection, and all the quiet things we choose to keep, or to let go.

Based on Pierre Michon's book « Life of Joseph Roulin » (1988), Le Dernier Courrier places the player in Joseph's routine as a postman. The player can meet characters and their bonds, memories, and daily lives. He discovers their lasting relationship with Roulin, their connection to life itself, their experiences, dreams and remorses. In a context tinged by goodbyes, these characters reflect on mutual improvement, with pragmatism and nostalgia, but always with gratitude.

The three pillars of the game are freedom, exploration, and exchange, or more precisely human connection. The players discover an open world and have the freedom to trace their own path. Nothing is imposed : They can take the time to reflect, to observe, to get involved with the inhabitants’ everyday lives… or simply wander with no pressure. We don’t guide, we invite. Here, freedom refers to following what matters the most to the player. This exploration allows to meet the inhabitants, and it makes exchanges with them possible : conversations, shared stories, letters to deliver or objects to pass on. Small human moments that give meaning to every step we take.
