During a project named M², we were instructed to craft a square meter of insulating pannel. We were free to choose the format, technique and material.
The goal was to calculate how much time we spent on this work to be able to estimate its worth if we were to commercialize it. It was a concrete project to encourage us towards a future professional design practice. I decided to build my panel using origami techniques. I folded 238 paper pyramids and then assembled them together on one rectangular panel. I wanted to create a high contrast, initially from fluorescent colors, inspired by the visuals from Jeremy Deller’s "Art is Magic" exhibition in Rennes from a few months before. I created a black pattern using linocutting, which I printed on fluorescent paper after. This way, I kept the captivating part of this color while making it less agressive to the eye thanks to the pattern.Including conception time, crafting, making, folding and then assembling times, this modular piece needed 28h20 to be complete.
Here, the modular aspect is hypothetical. Indeed, with a commercialization goal, this square meter would be customizable when ordered : the buyer would be able to choose between several colors or pattern variations obtained by changing the combination of the pyramids. Each one is assembled separately on the panel and is interchangeable with the others. The surface itself is evolutive, unset : it can stay always the same, slightly evolve, or radically change, according to the current liking of its owner. This project is almost an interaction between the creator and the final user. By allowing the customization of this product, the user is involved not only in the buying but in the creative process itself. The square meter then surpasses the base feature of the insulating panel, inviting the users to consider it as an interactive canvas.
